Flow Launcher Fuzzy Search and Acronyms Explained
Flow Launcher can match partial names and acronyms, so you do not always need an exact application title. These matches compete with results from enabled plugins. Test a full name first, then shorten it in stages to learn which abbreviated queries are reliable for your setup.
Steps to follow
- Choose a result with a known full name and verify that the complete query finds it.
- Try one distinctive word from the name, then an acronym. Compare the selected result and its source plugin.
- Inspect action keywords when a short query produces unrelated file or web results. Use an explicit plugin keyword for specialized searches.
- Adjust plugin priority only after checking that the matching behavior itself works. Recheck two or three other queries after a priority change.
Check the result
Your shortened query consistently selects the intended item without making common unrelated queries worse. Confirm the path when different apps have similar names.
Limits and common pitfalls
An acronym is not guaranteed to have a unique match. Locale, plugin behavior, and the available result set can affect which item appears first.
Make the check repeatable
Release 2.1.4 includes a correction for acronym searches involving numbers. When reproducing a matching issue, record the exact result title and query, not just a description such as abbreviation fails. That makes it possible to distinguish a version-specific bug from an ambiguous abbreviation.
Questions and answers
Is fuzzy search the same as searching file contents?
No. Fuzzy matching helps match result names; searching document contents requires the appropriate Explorer content-search action.
