Install Flow Launcher on Windows: First Launch

Installation · Published October 30, 2026 · Publisher: flowlauncher.app

At a glance

Install Flow Launcher by checking the release package, running the Windows installer, and opening the search window with Alt+Space. Start with the built-in plugins before adding community extensions. This separates installation problems from plugin configuration problems and gives you a small, repeatable first-launch test.

Steps to follow

  1. Check your Windows version and the release notes. The current 2.x branch is for Windows 10 and Windows 11; do not assume an older Windows 7 instruction still applies.
  2. Obtain the installer and verify its source and filename before opening it. A website download button is not, by itself, evidence that a file is authentic.
  3. Run the installer under your normal Windows account. Read any permission prompt; do not disable antivirus or grant administrator access merely to silence a warning.
  4. Open Flow Launcher, press Alt+Space, and search for an application you already use. Open Settings from the search bar to review the activation shortcut.

Check the result

The launcher should show an application result, open that application, and reopen with the selected hotkey. Confirm the version in About rather than relying only on the downloaded filename.

Limits and common pitfalls

An installer completing successfully does not prove every plugin or search engine is ready. If app search works but files do not appear, check Explorer and its indexing engine instead of reinstalling immediately.

Make the check repeatable

Treat the first session as a baseline: record the Flow version, Windows build, install location, and hotkey. Test a calculator expression and an app launch separately. Those checks distinguish a working launcher from an unavailable network service or an index that is still being populated.

Questions and answers

Do I need to install plugins before using Flow Launcher?

No. Begin with the included plugins. Add extra integrations only after basic launching and settings access work.
