Flow Launcher Slow Search: Isolate the Delayed Component

Troubleshooting · Published October 30, 2026 · Publisher: flowlauncher.app

At a glance

To diagnose slow Flow Launcher searches, compare local app results, indexed filenames, and network-backed plugins separately. The delay may be in an index or remote service rather than the launcher interface. Use the same known queries before and after each change.

Steps to follow

  1. Record Flow version, enabled plugins, search engine, and a small repeatable set of queries.
  2. Compare a built-in app search with a known filename search. Test that filename directly in the configured index engine.
  3. Temporarily disable nonessential network plugins or assign them dedicated keywords, then repeat the local tests.
  4. Change one setting at a time and compare both first-query and repeated-query behavior. Restore changes that do not improve your actual workflow.

Check the result

You can identify which query type is delayed and whether the delay also exists outside Flow. Record observations instead of claiming a universal speed score.

Limits and common pitfalls

A large index rebuild, busy disk, unavailable network share, or slow service can distort a one-off test. Do not use one query as proof of an application-wide performance problem.

Make the check repeatable

Keep a simple log with query, source plugin, cold or repeated run, and perceived completion point. Do not compare one tool’s first search with another tool’s cached search and call it a fair benchmark. A minimal profile can be useful only after preserving the original configuration.

Questions and answers

Will increasing plugin priority make searches faster?

Priority changes result ranking. It does not fix an unavailable service or a slow search engine.
